A MATTER OF SELF-SACRIFICE.

To the Editor. Sir, —Great preparations are being made all over New Zealand to worthily celebrate ! St. Patrick's Day, and the principal feature of these celebrations is the national concert. The proceeds of this concert are generally devoted to Catholic education, and it does seem a trifle strange that although committeemen may devote hours, days, and weeks to the preparation of the work, and do it for the cause, very willingly returning any honorarium that may be advanced, the Catholic performers at the concert expect their three or four guineas, and pocket it when they do get it. Admitting that making themselves proficient in their art of singing or reciting has cost them money and time, it has not cost them near so much sacrifice as has been paid by the good Brothers and nuns, who

not only labor for months for the success of the sports and concert, but also freely give their whole lives for the cause for which these good people give an evening. Where performers have to travel, it is quite reasonable they they should be provided with board and travelling expenses. —I am, etc., An Irish Irishman.
