At all the Masses on Sunday a letter from his Lordship Bishop Brodie was read in reference to providing funds for the Catholic chaplains at the front, and a collection is to be taken up on Sunday next for that object. A reception ceremony took place on Monday morning last in the convent chapel, when a candidate, received the holy habit of the religious of the Sacred Heart. His Lordship the Bishop, who performed the ceremony, assisted by Rev. Father Herbert, spoke a few touching words on the aims and objects of the religious life. On Monday afternoon last at the Convent of the Sacred Heart, his Lordship Bishop Brodie administered, the Sacrament of Confirmation to a number of the children of the boarding school. After the ceremony Solemn Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament was given, his Lordship being assisted by Very Rev. Dean Tubman, Rev. Father Herbert, and Rev. Father Aubry, Waimate. Invercargill (From our own correspondent.) The Sacrament of Confirmation will be administered in the local church on Sunday, November 12. A mission will start here next Sunday, on which day there will be three Masses—one at 7.30 a.m., one at 8.30 a.m., and the last Mass at 11 a.m. On Sunday next, before and after all the Masses a collection will be taken up in aid of the fund in connection with the distress in Ireland. Arrangements are well in hand for the Catholic bazaar, to be held in the Town Hall on October 20, and given fine weather, the various stall-holders anticipate a large attendance. The quarterly Communion of the local branch of the H.A.C.B. Society took place on Sunday, September 24, when a very large number of members approached the Holy Table. Very Rev. Father O’Donnell, who celebrated Mass, complimented the members on their good muster, and urged all young men of the parish to join its ranks. A most successful social was held in Holland’s Hall on October 4 for the purpose of assisting the funds of the forthcoming bazaar. Cards and other indoor amusements passed a very pleasant evening. Capital music was supplied by Miss Trusler and Mr. Alex. Hoffman. During the evening songs were contributed by Misses Ford, Roiall, Kabula, O’Brien, and Faulks.
