CARNIVAL OF THE ALLIES, MOSGIEL

The Carnival of the Allies was opened in the Coronation Hall, Mosgiel, on Thursday evening of last week. The hall was tastefully decorated for the occasion, whilst the five stalls, adorned with the colors of the allied nations, and laden with goods of every description, presented a most attractive appearance. Mr. A. F. Quelch (Mayor of Mosgiel), in his opening address, congratulated the committee on the very fine display which they were able to present. Goods had been donated not only by the people of Mosgiel; but a great deal of artistic and a great many useful articles had come from a distance. Some time ago it was decided to make an effort to liquidate the debt in connection with the school of the Sisters of Mercy in Mosgiel, and he was quite sure that it must be very gratifying to all concerned to see the success which had attended the effort so far. A generous response to the appeal for assistance had been made on all sides; in fact, there was one stall, the Belgian stall, which was controlled and would be run” entirely by ladies from Dunedin. His Worship then made congratulatory reference to the fine display of goods .on the various stalls, and concluded by declaring the Carnival open. A fine programme, consisting of marches, dances, etc., was given each evening to the great delight of those present.

The stalls were as follow; Empire Stall (refreshments, lollies, flowers, etc.) — Mrs. Quelch and assistants. Italy Stall (fancy goods)—Mrs. . Walls, Mrs. O’Neill, and assistants. Russian Stall (fancy goods)—Mrs. Stevenson, Mrs. Harty, and assistants. Belgium Stall (fancy goods)—Miss Staunton and assistants. France Stall (produce)—Messrs. McCann and McGettigan and assistants. Airgun Shooting Gallery.—Messrs. W. Hawke and John O’Brien. Toy Dip.—Mr. Bert Ryan and assistants. The attendance throughout was exceptionally good, especially on Saturday night, when the hall was crowded to inconvenience. As it was Impossible to dispose of all the goods on that occasion, it was decided to continue the bazaar on Monday evening, when it was brought to a close, and, the art union was drawn. A list of the winning numbers in the art union will be published in the next issue of the N.Z. Tablet. On the whole, the Rev. Father Morkane and his committee, and the zealous stallholders, are to be congratulated on the success of the undertaking, the net results being about £SOO.
