Paeroa
The most successful mission ever held in this district, which was conducted by the Rev. Father Mangan, C.SS.R., was brought to a close after the eight o’clock Mass on Sunday, June 4,. in St. Mary’s Church, Paeroa (says the Ohinemuri Gazette). At the opening ceremony, which took place at the ten o’clock Mass on Sunday? May 27, Monsignor Hackett, in introducing the preacher, said that the name of Father Mangan as an able and zealous worker was known far and wide. The result of his labors during his missionary career in the old lands, the Australian Commonwealth, and this Dominion, in bringing many careless Catholics back to the path from where they once strayed, was in itself an eloquent tribute, not only to Father Mangan, but also to the illustrious founder of the Redemptorist Order, of which the missioner was a worthy representative. Although the weather was not altogether what would desired, particularly for the early Masses, there was a record attendance, and in each instance the great bulk of the people approached the Holy Table. In his closing remarks Father Mangan thanked those who, at considerable inconvenience to themselves, had done much to contribute to the .success of the mission. He thanked the choir for the beautiful rendering of the various items, and complimented Monsignor Hackett on being so fortunate as to secure the services of such talented performers. He also complimented the Sisters of St. Joseph’s School for the very efficient manner they instilled in their pupils the knowledge of the Christian doctrine, and concluded by specially thanking Monsignor Hackett for his hospitality. Later on Father Mangan proceeded to Karangahhke, where he gave a week’s mission.
