Ashburton
(From our own correspondent.) As a consequence of accepting an appointment with the Canterbury Farmers’ Co-operative branch at Rangiora, a very old resident, in the person of Mr. T. O Carroll, and his family, contemplate leaving Ashburton. The prominent part taken by the O’Carroll family in all local Church undertakings, coupled with the esteem in which they are held by a large circle of friends, resulted in a presentation being made them on Friday evening last at a social gathering in their honor. The Rev. Father O’Donnell presided over a crowded assemblage of friends and well-wishers. Progressive euchre provided the first portion of the evening’s entertainment, the prize-winners of the same being Miss A. Lennon and Mr. H. McSherry. During the evening, the Rev. Father O’Donnell, in a few well* chosen and appropriate remarks, presented Mrs. O’Carroll with a silver tea service and dinner set, and Mr. Carroll with a set of military hair brushes. In doing so, he conveyed the best wishes of their many Ashburton friends for their future prosperity and happiness. A suitable acknowledgment of the gifts was made by Mr. O’Carroll. The musical programme for the evening was provided by Misses Quigley and R. Brown, Messrs. M. J. Burgess, J. McCormick, P. Cullen, and J. Fitzgerald. Refreshments were handed round by a number of young ladies. Cheers for the O’Carroll family, and the singing of the National Anthem concluded an enthusiastic social gathering. ■
