May 29. The St. Vincent de Paul Society held another successful euchre tournament in the Foresters' Hall last Wednesday evening. The proceeds were for the ladies' branch, who had charge of the local Red Cross shop last Saturday, the amount forming a nucleus for the undertaking of the work. The electric light, which has been installed in St. Patrick's Church by Mrs. P. Gleeson and her family, in memory of the late Mr. P. Gleeson, was used for the first time last night, and is a very welcome improvement on the gas. i _ Wanganui (From our own correspondent.) The following are the particulars of the activities of the conferences of the St. Vincent de Paul Society for the quarter ended May During the quarter the receipts of St. Mary's Conference were £SO 19s 7d, including a balance of £29 7s 3d brought forward. The expenditure was £23 6s 2d, leaving a balance in hand of £27 13s sd. There are 28 active members and one honorary member. Families relieved, 13; persons relieved, 56; visits to poor, 30; books and pamphlets distributed, 768; visits to hospital, 22. The secretary of Sjb. Lawrence's Conference reported that the receipts for the past quarter amounted to £2l 14s Bd, including a balance of £l4 15s lOd brought forward, and that the expenditure was £lO ' 19s 2d, leaving a credit balance of £lO 15s 6d. The active members number 28, honorary members 15; visits to poor, 12; visits to hospital, 20; families provided with clothing, 9; books and pamphlets distributed, 60. The weekly sewing meeting has been presided over by Mrs. Meehan, and a large quantity of work has been done for the military hospital and Red Cross Society. ' * The secretary of St. Joseph's Conference (Aramoho) states that the quarter's receipts, including balance (£2l 18s 6d) brought forward, were £26 95 lOd, and the expenditure, £8 3s 7d. The conference has 21 active and six honorary members. Ten visits were paid to the Hospital, and three families were relieved. - A ladies' auxiliary branch has been started in the district. / { -
