Devotions in honor of the Blessed Virgin are to be held in the church every evening during the month of May. A special sermon is also to be preached every Sunday evening during the month by Rev. Father Herbert, S.M., explaining the Catholic doctrine concerning devotion to our Blessed Lady. ' , V 1 On Wednesday morning last, a ceremony of reception was held in the chapel of the Convent of the Sacred Heart, when a postulant received the holy- habit ■of ‘ the Order. Rev. Father Aubrey, S.M., of Waimate, performed the ceremony, and also preached a sermon suitable to the occasion. - 1 s _ . ~ In accordance with the wishes of his . Lordship the Bishop, Anzac Day was observed here in a fitting , and solemn manner. There was one of the largest congregations ever present in the church at 11 o’clock, when a Missa Cantata was celebrated by. Rev. - Father - Herbert, who, taking for his text — ‘ Going, they shall go weeping; but- coming, they shall come joyfully, carrying' their sheaves,’ preached an able and eloquent sermon, ■ dealing with the history of ; the war from a religious standpoint. The rev. preacher paid a loving tribute to those heroes who had laicDdown their lives so willingly and gladly for King and country, and referred' in a special manner to the bovs of the district, who. had fallen in battle, and spoke words of sympathy and consolation to their bereaved relatives and friends. ; „ After the Mass, prayers for the dead were recited, and the ‘ Dead March ’ was played by the organist?
