MR7 MATTHEW LYONS, W AIM ATE.
; : .There passed away on . April 18 a kindly and much respected old - settler in the. person of Mr. Matthew Lyons (says . the Wannate Advertiser) . ' The late Mr. Lyons was born in County Galway 76 years ago. Leaving home at the age of 12 years, he came with his parents to Bendigo, Victoria, where he lived .for a few years. ;. In the early ’sixties he left Australia to join in the Gabriel’s Gully rush, ; and after digging i in -Otago for some time :he went back to '; Australia to v bring - his parents over to New Zealand, they settling in Waipori, where the subject of this notice also married and settled down.- Deceased came to, Waimate in 1870, and worked for Mr. Pratt, the road contractor. Afterwards he was employed by the-County Council as a roadman, until he retired, when he took up. a section of Govern■merit- land on Norton Reserve, / where :he resided till his death. • He died after three days’ illness, fortified :by the rites of the Church. He was a staunch Catholic and a very . old supporter of; the N.Z. . Tablet. The funeral, which} took place on-Holy Thursday, was very ;largely- attended; The Rev. Father'; Stewart officiated at the graveside. The deceased leaves two sons and three daughters to pu>u?u their loss.-—R.I.P.- • • * ■ - v . ■■■ ■
