ORDINATIONS AT MOUNT ST. MARY’S, GREENMEADOWS.

(From an occasional correspondent.)

The, beautiful chapel at Mount St. Mary’s, Greenmeadows, was the scene of most impressive ceremonies during the last week, when a number of young men received sacred Orders. During* the annual retreat, which was preached this year by Rev. Father W. D. Goggan, S.M., the ceremony of ordination to the subdiacouate took place. On the Feast of the Immaculate Conception his Grace Archbishop Redwood conferred the subdiaconate on the Revs. C. J. Outtrim, S.M., Dalton 11. Campbell, S.M., James M. Roche, S.M., Kevin I. McGrath, S.M., and John W. Dowling, S.M. On Saturday, December 11, Mr. Paul Kane made his religious profession as a member of the Society of Mary. On Sunday, December 12, his Grace Archbishop Redwood, S.M., conferred the Sacrament of Holy Orders on several young men, viz., Rev. J. W. Stewart, S.M. (Nelson), Rev. A. J. Cullen, S.M. (Wellington), and Rev. B. J. Ryan,' S.M. (Wellington). The Revs. C. J. Outtrim, S.M., D. H. Campbell, S.M., J. M. Roche, S.M., K. I. McGrath, S.M., and J. W. Dowling, S.M., received the diaconate. Mr. Paul Kane, S.M., received Minor Orders. The Rev. Dr. Casey, S.M., acted as master of ceremonies during the ordination. Quite a number of parents and relatives of the ordinandi were present at the ceremony, and also a number of visiting clergy. After the ceremony of ordination the young priests gave their first blessing to all present. The parents and friends of the ordinandi were later in the day entertained at luncheon by the faculty of Mount St, Mary’s,

His Grace, at the conclusion of the luncheon, proposed the toast of the. newly-ordained priests, and referred to the great dignity that had been conferred upon them. He expressed his joy at having the privilege of conferring this great dignity upon these young men, and wished them every success in their future missionary life. Rev. Father _ Stewart, S.M., on behalf ‘of the newly-ordained priests thanked his Grace for the very kind remarks and good wishes for the future. He feelingly expressed his gratitude to all those who had so generously assisted in bringing about this happy event ini their lives. He referred to the great help given, especially by the superiors and faculty of the scholasticate, and also by the good example and model lives of the lay-Brothers of the Society of Mary. But if there was anyone they. should be more grateful to, it was to their dear parents, who had done so much to foster their vocation. He was sure no one would be happier that day than their parents. Solemn Benediction in the afternoon was given by Father Stewart, S.M., assisted by the Rev. C. J. Outturn, S.M., and Rev. D. 11. Campbell, S.M., asdcacon and subdeacon respectively. The ‘Te Benin ’ was sung by the students in thanksgiving for all the graces bestowed on them that clay. Thus ended one of the happiest of days, and the friends departed with grateful hearts to the faculty of Mount St. Mary’s, who had entertained them so hospitably. Rev. Father Stewart said his First Mass at the Convent of the Sisters of the Missions in. Napier in the presence of his relatives, the Sisters, and the convent children. Rev. Father A. J. Cullen, S.M., celebrated his first Mass at St. Patrick’s, .Napier, in the presence of a large congregation: Rev. Father B. J. Ryan, S.M., had the privilege of celebrating his first Mass in the college chapel in Mount St. Mary’s, in the presence of the students and his relatives. 1 i -T-TT' ■,»
