ARCHDIOCESE OP WELLINGTON (From our own correspondent.) October 23. The bazaar for St. Anne's parish opens next Saturday night at St. Anne's Hall, and everything is ready for this important function. Her Excellency Lady Liverpool has graciously consented to perform the opening ceremony.

The funeral of the late Mr. H. McCardle, former chief draughtsman to the Land and Survey Department, , took place at Karori. The cortege was accompanied by many friends of the deceased, including a large number from the Lands and Survey Department. The Yen. Archdeacon Devoy, S.M., assisted by the Rev. Father Barra, S.M., officiated at the cemetery. At St. Mary of the Angels’ Church, Wellington, yesterday, Miss Elizabeth Madden, youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. N. Madden, of Blenheim, was married to Mr. J. B. Ryan, of the Defence Office* Wellington, son of Mr and Mrs Ryan, of Christchurch, Very Rev. Father O’Connell officiated. Mr. A. Avery was best man, and the bridesmaid was Miss . Stella McCusker, of Blenheim. Mr. and Mrs. Ryan motored north for the honeymoon.

A Solemn Requiem High*Mass was celebrated at the .Basilica: of the Sacred Heart last Thursday for the repose of the soul of the late Mr. C. Redwood, brother

of , his- Grace Archbishop Redwood. His Grace Archbishop Redwood presided, and his Grace Archbishop O’Shea was present. ' ThevVery Rev. Dean Regnault, S.M., Adm., was celebrant. Very. Rev. Father O’Connell deacon, and Rev. Father Smyth subdeacon. All the city and suburban clergy were present, and the music of the Mass was chanted by the clergy.

S. Swan, W. Gamble, J. D. McPhee, T. J. Davis, T. O’Brien, W. H. Giles, J. Stratford, R. P. Flanagan, and P. D. Hoskins. Accounts totalling £167 were passed for payment. ' Mr. Martin Kennedy, K.S.G., forwarded a cheque for £SO as a donation towards the fund. The securities being reported upon by the trustees as satisfactory, the investment of £2lO was approved. The following officers were elected for the ensuing year:Patron, his Grace Archbishop Redwood; chairman, his Grace Archbishop O’Shea; vicechairman, Mr. J. J. L. Burke; treasurer, Mr. B. Doherty; hon. secretary, Mr. P. D. Hoskins; trustees, Very Rev. Dean Regnault,. S.M., and Messrs. Burke and Doherty; auditors, Messrs. Giles and Stratford. A motion of condolence with his Grace Archbishop Redwood on the death of his brother (Mr. ,C. Redwood) was passed, and also a resolution welcoming his Grace Archbishop O’Shea on his return from America. His Grace Archbishop O’Shea is much benefited by his holiday. His Grace says that he was deeply impressed with the growth of the Church in America and of its progress, particularly in the matter of Catholic education. The control and administration necessary for a diocese with a Catholic population of a million people, and 1100 priests, was no easy task for a Bishop, yet by a marvellous system, the Bishop got through his work with comparative ease. Particular attention was paid to the schools, the buildings being plain, like large warehouses, but each school contained its auditorium, a large hall into which the various classrooms opened, where the school concerts, lectures, or other functions were given. Owing to the price of land the playgrounds were on the roof, and in the extremes of heat and cold to which this portion of America is subject, complete and up-to-date arrangements were made for cooling or heating the buildings as the case may be. His Grace, prior to his departure from America, experienced a heat wave, which he had often read about in the cables from time to time, but he never realised what it meant until he felt it. It lasted ten days, during which period hundreds of persons died, horses dropped dead on the streets, and building and other work had to cease. The Irish in America were

as , anti-German as . any Britisher, would feel, and they have the utmost' confidence in the leadership of Mr. John Redmond.
