ST. VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY, DUNEDIN
The annual meeting of St. Joseph's Conference of the St. Vincent de Paul Society, Dunedin, was held in St. Joseph's Hall on Tuesday evening of last week. Very Rev. Father Coffey, Adm., presided, and there was a fair attendance of members. The following was the annual report:—During the past year the sewing meetings have been well attended. Many useful garments were made and given to those in need. Hospitals ' and prison have been visited, and the > poor and sick attended to in their homes seven women were sent to Mount Magdala, three girls to St. Vincent de Paul Orphanage, two boys to Nelson, one girl to Rotorua, one man to Taihape, one woman and two children to Wellington, one man (an invalid) assisted to return to his friends in Scotland, and eleven children were baptised. The following orders and goods were given out::111 grocery
orders, -62 coal orders, 6 meat orders- 504 . yards flan- ;: neVfette, 6 yards flannel, 62 yards dress material, 283 new "garments, 401 second-hand garments, 21 pairs new bobts,--32 pairs second-hand boots, 18 pairs new blan- : kets;' also bedding and furniture, hot: water ;bags andSi fruit to the sick;. One ' large roll of flannelette was sent to/the Early Settlers' Hall for the Belgian relief fund. Fourteen active members are on the roll. We would be glad- to welcome new members, especiallyj to help with the monthly collecting, for we find it very hard to meet all the demands on our small banking account. We are hoping before many weeks are over to be able to do something towards establishing a home for young girls, for it is greatly needed. At times it is most difficult for us to get board for young girls coming from the country and other towns. : The committee thank all who have helped the society during the past year, and would especially mention his Lordship the Bishop and clergy, the committee of the Victoria Convalescent Guild, U.S.S. Company, police, Mrs. Ansell, Rev. J. Cumming, Messrs. Callan and Gallaway, Drs. Hall and Church, and Mr. Dawson for his generous donation of twelve pairs of blankets. By the efforts of the Victoria Convalescent Guild and Rev. J. Cumming, we were able to give a change of air to twelve people who were in delicate health. Very Rev. Father Coffey, in moving the adoption of the report and balance sheet, congratulated the members on the good work done during the past year, and said they should make an effort to increase the roll of active members. With regard to the proposal to establish a home for young girls, who came to Dunedin from the country, he suggested that the question be referred to a committee to report to a meeting to be held later on. The suggestion was agreed to, and the following were appointed a committee to go into the matter: Verv Rev. Father Coffey, Adm., Messrs. J. B. Callan, T. J. Hussey, J. Hally, Mesdames Jackson, Mowat. Hungerford, Duffy, Carter, Cornish, Hade, and Miss Cameron. Balance Sheet. Receipts.
The report and balance sheet were adopted. The following are the officers for the current year: —President, Mrs. Jackson vice-president, Mrs. Mowat; secretary, Mrs. Hussey ; treasurer, Mrs. Cantwell; wardrobe-keepers, Mesdames Stone and Hally.
