(By telegraph, from our own correspondent.) October 11. The week's mission in the Grey Lynn parish terminated on Sunday evening. Every morning and evening the church was filled to hear the instructions and exhortations of Rev. Father O'Sullivan, C.SS.R. Both the Missioner and Very Rev. Chancellor Holbrook, parish priest, were exceedingly gratified at the hearty response of the people. Father O'Sullivan
leaves at once to commence a mission in-the Dunedin diocese. ! :"•■•.. 7- , ; . ■-■■. ,■■>. At St. Benedict's yesterday morning, the men of i the parish in large numbers received Holy Communion. Right Rev. / Mgr. : Gillan, V.G., in addressing;- them, : : took occasion to refer to the devastating war in progress in the northern hemisphere, and : asked ; their prayers for those at the' front who needed them. A procession, in honor of the Blessed Virgin took place after Vespers. ■- ; ' .' _ ' '" - ' ;' : , ■ For the purpose of forming a branch of the Mercy Guild, which has its headquarters at the Convent of the Sisters of Mercy, Ponsonby, a well-attended meeting was held at St. Leo's Academy, Devonport, last Tuesday evening. "Mrs. J. J. O'Brien (president) attended and explained the objects for which the guild was formed, giving details of the amount of comforts already provided for the soldiers at the front and for the hospital ship, and expressing the hope that the Devonport branch would soon be in a fair way to show something substantial for its.efforts. 'Mrs. A. Gold.water was elected branch president, Mrs. Baskiville vice-president, Mrs. J. P. Wright treasurer, and Miss J. M. Koefoed secretary. In order to give the guild a start, Mr. J. J. O'Brien made a donation. A collection was also taken up in the room for Christmas presents for the soldiers. \; r The members of the Holy Family Confraternity , received Holy Communion at .the Cathedral on Sunday at the early Mass. Rev. Father Dunphy addressed the last meeting of the confraternity. The trustees of the local branch of the Hibernian Society placed a scheme before the members to-night for renovating and improving the interior of the Hibernian Hall, which would make it more comfortable and suitable for concerts, while providing a more suitable room for branch meetings. - His Grace Archbishop O'Shea is expected to arrive here on next Monday from Vancouver. Arrangements are being made to extend to him a fitting welcome. Huntly i (By telegraph, from our own correspondent.) October 11. A well-attended meeting of the H.A.C.B. Society was held on Sunday night, when Bro. B. Berry (vicepresident) presided. On last Thursday night Rev. Father O'Doherty proceeded to Hamilton, where he delivered a most interesting and instructive lecture on the technical terms used in connection with the present war, and on the composition and movements of an army in time of war. Tenders are being called for the erection of a power-house and for the installation of an electric lighting plant, for which purpose a loan was recently sanctioned ..by the ratepayers.
