. ... ———— Hf —^——— ■ ARCHDIOCESE OP WELLINGTON . • :■' * •■'■'. (From our own correspondent.) ' October 9. *,. His Grace Archbishop O'Shea is due in Auckland from Vancouver by the Niagara on October 18. > The Rev. Father Brennan, of Taumaranui, arrived during the week, and reported himself for duty at the camp, Trentham. Everything is well in hand for the bazaar to be opened towards the end of the month at St. Anne's Hall, Newtown. The Ven. Archdeacon Devoy and an energetic committee 'are doing everything possible to make a great success of it. The Rev. Father Kinkead, of Carterton, has been appointed chaplain of the military camp, Tauherenikau, where a large body of men are encamped. Father Kinkead for some time past has celebrated Mass in a marquee at the camp every Sunday. He also regularly visits the camp twice a week, and in addition attends to the military hospital patients. The school children of St. Anne's parish were on Tuesday last taken for a picnic to Seatoun bv the Ven. Archdeacon Devoy. The Rev. Fathers Peoples, S.M., O'Connor, S.M., and Finnerty, S.M., were also present. Special cars were hired, and a goodly programme of races, etc., was gone through. Needless to say that the outing was thoroughly enjoyed. --;.., I very much regret to record the death of Mrs. J. Beckingsale, which occurred at Kelburn on Thursday, October 7, after a long illness, borne with Christian fortitude and resignation. The deceased lady, who was a sister of Major T. P. Halpin, of this city, spent the whole of her life in Wellington, being educated by the Sisters of Mercy. Until recently she was a member of St. Patrick's congregation, Kilbirnie, and identified herself with many good works connected with the Church in that district. She was only thirtynine years of age, and leaves a husband and one child to mourn the loss of a good wife and fond mother. The interment took place at Karori this morning, prior "to which a Requiem Mass was celebrated by the Rev. Father Smyth, S.M., at the Basilica of the Sacred Heart. The pall-bearers were her- three brothers (Major T. P. Halpin, and Messrs. Robert and Benjamin Halpin, of Auckland) and her, nephew (Mr. Lawrence Halpin, son of Major Halpin). To her bereaved relatives and friends is extended the sincerest

sympathy of a large circle of friends.—R.l.P.

With the blessing and approval of his Grace the Archbishop it has been definitely decided to establish the first Central Council of the St. Vincent de Paul Society in New Zealand at Wellington. The Superior Council of Australasia has consistently urged this step for a considerable time past, and has expressed a desire that the Council should hold its meetings in Wellington on account of its central position. The members will consist of the presidents and vice-presidents of the various Particular Councils in New Zealand, with several additional members chosen from the local conferences to form a permanent executive. According to the rules of the society, the first president is nominated by the Superior Council of Australasia, and that body has already been asked to make the appointment. As soon as a reply has been received the various Particular Councils will be communicated with. The proposed step marks a new era of progress for the society in New Zealand.
