HIS LORDSHIP BISHOP CLEARY

(By telegraph., from our own correspondent.) October 4. His Lordship Bishop Cleary arrived in Auckland by the Makura early on Monday morning. He was accompanied by the Rev. Father Kehoe, his life-long friend, who went to Sydney two months ago to be near the Bishop during the most critical phases of the latter's long illness. 11 is Lordship is still very feeble, and he had to be carried up and down the gangway and companion way of the Makura. His medical advisers were at first opposed to his return to Auckland so soon, but, as the patient was keen on being among his own people, they consented to his taking the trip with proper precautions, and with the promise of a complete rest of several months after arrival. Fortunately the journey was made over smooth seas, and all went well with his Lordship on the way. He was met at Auckland bv the Right Rev. Mgr. Brodie, V.G., the Right Rev. Mgr. Gillan, V.G., Very Rev. Chancellor Holbrook, Rev. Father Cahill, and a few lay friends. Owing to the Bishop's state of health, the clergy advised the people against meeting his Lordship in a body on his arrival. The Sisters of Mercy of St. Mary's, and the children of St. Mary's School lined the avenue to the Bishop's House on his arrival there, and gave him a hearty greeting. Large numbers of telegrams of welcome were received during the day from all over New Zealand. There were also numerous callers inquiring about the Bishop's health. His Lordship is now under the daily care of Dr. Marcheseni, and for the present is not allowed to receive visitors, or telegraphic or other correspondence. He is, however, bright and cheerful, and is making quite satisfactory progress. His numerous friends will be pleased to learn that, after a few months of thorough rest, his health will be better and more robust than it has been for many years past.
