There were very many benefit societies; there were many national societies; there were many scientific and art societies (said his Grace Archbishop Duhig at the annual dinner of the Hibernian Society, Brisbane), but there was no, society that blended the love of faith and fatherland as their society did. One had only to look at the design on the card of their society to find the cross, pointing out that faith in the first place was the rock on which the society was built ; and on each side of the cross were the emblems of Ireland, exhorting them to a love of the Old Land and on the other side was the emblem exhorting them as Australians to love the land of their birth or of their adoption.
