ST. JOSEPH’S HARRIERS, DUNEDIN
On Saturday, September 11, St. Joseph’s Hamers held their Three-mile Cross Country Handicap race at St. Clair. Starting behind Cargill’s Castle, the trail led past the golf links in a south-westerly direction towards Mr. Hamilton’s property; then, turning to the north, some fine harrier country was crossed, till Mr. Sidey’s residence was reached. From here the course led down the hill to St. Clair car terminus, via St. Clair Park. C. Whelan was making the best of his handicap, and had gained on the front man. At Mr. Sidey’s residence the positions were; C. Whelan first, G. Pedofsky second. In the run home G. Pedofsky tried to overtake C. Whelan, but without result, and the race finished as follows:—C. Whelan (2min 30sec), actual time 20min 53sec, 1; G. Pedofsky (Imin 30sec), actual time 20min 27sec, 2 ; M. Kennedy (3min), actual time 23min 20sec, 3 ; C. Moloney (50sec), actual time 21min 30sec 4 ; T. Roughan (40sec), actual time 21min 23sec, 5. The winner (C. Whelan) is a young member, having joined only this year. He has a fine style of running, and should be heard of again. His rival (G. Pedofsky) is also a new member, and has the honor of registering fastest time. M. Kennedy, the third man, ran wed considering the short time he has been in the club. The club wishes to thank the following: Mr. H. Burk (timekeeper and starter), Messrs. D. McErlain and W. Griffin (who acted as judges), J. O’Farrell and A. Ahern (who laid the trail), the caretaker of the baths, and all who assisted in making the race a complete success.
