ST. VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY, NORTH-EAST VALLEY
The fifth annual meeting of the Sacred Heart Conference of the St. Vincent de Paul Society, Northeast Valley, was held on Tuesday evening, September 14. The Rev. Father Corcoran presided, and there was a representative attendance of members. The following was the annual report: Twenty-six meetings were held, the average attendance being seven. The cases relieved numbered 26, being an increase of 3 on the number relieved last year; 62 visits were paid to the sick and poor, an increase of 8 on those of last year. As a result of those visits 3 children were baptised. The orders given were —Coal, 59; groceries, 24 boots, 17 pairs; blankets, 3 pairs; 106 new garments and Byds new material were distributed, also 180 second-hand garments. In addition to the above, 70 new and 140 second-hand garments were sent to the Early Settlers’ Hall for the Belgians. We desire to thank Rev. Father Buckley for his assistance, also the honorary members and friends who sent donations, material, and otherwise rendered assistance. We regret the loss of three valuable membersviz., Father Buckley, who has gone to Invercargill; our hon. secretary (Mrs. Rossbotham), who has gone to Gisborne; and our vice-president (Mrs. J. J. Connor), who is retiring through ill-health. The active members number 17, and the subscribers 80. The receipts for the year totalled £53 18s 4d, made up as follow:—Balance in bank, £27 16s 4d; subscriptions, £l9 12s; church collections, £6 10s. The expenditure amounted to £2B 19s 6d, leaving a credit balance of £24 18s lOd. The principal items of expenditure were —Coal, £l6 6s'6d; groceries, £5 4s 6d; drapery, £1 18s 6cl; boots and shoes, £1 10s 3d; balance on new sewing machine, £1 2s; Mount Magdala, £1 Is. > The election of officers resulted as follows:—President, Mrs. Hungerford ; vice-president, Mrs. Duffy ; secretary, Miss Murphy ; wardrobe-keeper, Miss Crowe.
