HIS LORDSHIP BISHOP CLEARY

On Monday afternoon we received the following cable message from Rev. Father Kehoe, Sydney, regarding the condition of his Lordship Bishop Cleary : ‘Bishop Cleary just now safely. through a second operation. ’ • Our Auckland correspondent, telegraphing on Monday evening, said:— ‘Right Rev. Mgr. Brodie, V.G., received a cable message this afternoon from Rev. Father Kehoe, who is at present in Sydney, to the effect that his Lordship Bishop Cleary underwent an operation during the morning, and that he passed through it safely.’

HOLY FATHER.

His Lordship Bishop Cleary has received from his Excellency the Apostolic Delegate, the following gracious message sent by the Holy Father, through the Cardinal Prefect of the Congregation of Propaganda:-

My Lord Bishop, —From a report by his Excellency the Apostolic Delegate for Australasia: recently received by this Sacred Congregation, I- learn with lively pleasure of the happy issue of the onerous, longsustained and laborious efforts put forth by your Lordship, in order to prevent a State religious instruction of a positively Protest ant character being introduced into, and forced by law upon, the public schools. I have taken upon myself to acquaint the Holy Father also with tin* Apostolic Delegate’s report thereon, regarding your Lordship's zeal, self-denial, and untiring activity : and I am happy to be aide to say to you that the Supreme Pontiff bits received this consoling information with a lively and special interest, charging me to convey to you— as 1 hereby do—■ his sovereign pleasure, his sincere congratulations, and to send to you, in his name, a special Apostolic Blessing. ‘ Accept, at the same time, my Lord, my personal congratulations and those of (his Sacred Congregation of Propaganda : whilst, wishing von every blessing, I pray that God may long preserve and prosper yon. ‘ I remain, my Lord, ‘ Devotedly yours, • .‘ Fit.
