August 17.. . ; ■ The patronal " feast day of the Church of the Assumption, Sunday, August 15, was : celebrated in a .fitting manner at Onehunga. •. The much admired - high altar was beautifully decorated by the nuns with •£ arum lilies, and, after the Missa Cantata at 10 o’clock-, ‘ Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament took - place: until Benediction and procession in the evening. : When; the ■ Rosary had been recited a number of young ladies ; were received into the !; sodality • of, the -i’ Children of Mary,. after which the Right Rev. Mgr Mahoney, who wore his new robes for the first time, preached on the sub? ject of the day’s festival. The rochet; a most beautiful and costly piece of lace work, was the: gift of the. ’ Sisters of Mercy, Auckland, and a share in the making r of it was taken by the venerable Mother Ignatius, who was the first teacher of the Monsignor in Auckland over fifty years ago. Large numbers received .Holy Communion at the first Mass, and there was a good attendance in the evening, considering the inclemency of the' weather. - '. _• - “ , - On the previous Friday morning a very pleasant entertainment was given by the convent school children in the parish hall to celebrate the - occasion of Dean Mahoney being raised to the dignity of Monsignor, by our Holy Father Pope Benedict XV. After the song of welcome was sung by the children, an address' of congratulation was read by Miss Annie ' Simmonds, after which he was presented with a handsome carpet square, the gift of the children and their teachers, the local Sisters of Mercy. Monsignor Mahoney was profuse in his thanks to the donors for their thoughtfulness' in selecting for him such a handsome and useful gift, and in honor of the occasion he granted the children a half holiday. . 7
