ALLEN DOONE'S RETURN
Mr. Allen Doone commences his Dunedin season in His Majesty’s Theatre to-morrow (Friday) evening, when he presents a new play, Barry of Ballymore,’ in which Mr. Doone 'plays the name part. The story is described as possessing great Interest and domestic beauty. The scene is laid in County Galway in the eighteenth century, a period of picturesque dressing and custom. The press notices on the production in Australia have been laudatory to a degree. The love interest is very strong in the play, and the duel in the last act is pronounced dramatic and powerful. In the story ‘ Barry ’ (an Irish peasant’s son) has returned after years a successful and great artist. He loves the Lady Mary, daughter of Lord Bannon. The lady at first scorns with contempt the advances of the erstwhile peasant, and the manner in which Barry conquers that decision and brings a confession of her love affords strong attraction in the development of the plot. Mr. Doone will be heard in four new songs —‘ Mary,’ ‘ Heart’s bouquet,’ 1 Mother asthore,’ and ‘ Eyes of Irish blue,’, in which he has the assistance of little children dressed in the pretty garb of Ireland at that period.
