Palmerston North
(From our own correspondent.)
On Sunday evening last a sacred conceit, organised by the members of the St. Vincent de Paul Society, was held in the Zealandia Hall. The object of the concert was the relief of a stricken Catholic family. The building was packed, over £32 being, taken by means of the silver-coin collection. Mrs. Brown, the chairwoman of the society, with Mrs. Devine, collected a large sum of money for the fund, the trustees of which were Messrs. Wm. Devine and F. J. Oakley. At the present time over £6O is in hand, subscription lists being still open. The total of Palmerston North's contribution to the Huntly relief fund was £269 9s sd. The Mayor received the following letter from the secretary of the fund : ' I have to thank you for forwarding this further addition to the Huntly mines disaster relief fund. We thought before that Palmerston had done well, but this further proof of the practical sympathy of your people is most pleasing.' . The celebrations connected with Christmas tide were largely attended at St. Patrick's Church. On Christmas morning the choir, under the able baton of 'Mr. R. Whittaker, rendered Farmer's Mass in a very capable manner. After the Mass the choir adjourned to the presbytery, where Mr. Whittaker, who is leaving the parish, was presented with a nicely engraved silver cigarette case as a mark of the choir's appreciation of his services. ; ■ ■
