Wanganui
(From our own correspondent.) The fortnightly meeting of the local branch of the H.A.C.B. Society was held on Tuesday evening before a good attendance of members, the president, Bro. D. Dwyer, being in the chair. , A large amount of routine business was dealt with, principally the change of meeting night to meet the wishes of some of our younger members who, as stated previously, are in the Territorials. So members will please take note that on and after January 27, 1915, all meetings will be held on Wednesday evenings every second week. Bro. A. McWilliams, P.P., was elected delegate for this branch to the district meeting in Auckland, to be held in February. Bro. A. J. Fitzgerald, P.P., will represent the branch at the opening of the new branch of the society at Stratford, which is a move in the right direction, as we all want to see a branch in every town of note in the Dominion. The following nominations were received for the offices of the branch for the ensuing six months: —President, Bro. D. Dwyer; vice-president, Bro. C. M. Morgan; secretary, Bro. W. J. McGonigle; treasurer, Bro. W. McTubbs; warden, Bro. D. McAfee; guardian, Bro. F. X. Jans; sick visitors, Bros. C. M. Morgan, V.P., and S. McAfee. As these were the only nominations received, no election is necessary. Installation will take place at a meeting to be held on January 12, to be followed by a social evening at Dustin’s. The opportunity will also be taken of presenting a past president’s collar to Bro. P. Keogh, P.P., who is under orders of transfer to the South Island. 2 ' Palmerston North (From our own correspondent.) The excellence of the teaching methods of the local Sisters of Mercy has been demonstrated again and again, but the results of the school examinations just to hand would seem to overshadow their previous successes. Eighteen pupils were entered for the sixth standard examination, and every one of these obtained a proficiency certificate. The names of the candidates are as follow-.—Horace Keating, Edward Lundy, Daniel Minogue, Stanley Oulaghan, Thomas Rosonoski, Shora Maree, Alphonsus Rodgers, Eva Brophy, Nellie Dawick, Milly De Rosa, Amy Duff, Clare Hesketh, Hilda Kavanagh, Ethel Lewis, Katie Nash, Alma Rush, Vera Stone, Cecily Tabor. The marks gained were very high, in most instances being over 90 per cent. .
Palmerston has rarely witnessed such enthusiasm as was evinced at the great patriotic, demonstration on Saturday evening. The object of the proceedings was to encourage recruiting, and the result was very satisfactory, a large number of recruits being obtained. - -
