v Miss Amy Castles, . who is studying grand opera in Milan, writes .very feelingly of the way the war is affecting singers" and musicians in Italy. Many professionals are obliged to sing in the streets to earn their daily bread. v "' £, ;■■■' ■. ; ' V- ; -, \i U On a recent afternoon Mr. Allen Doohe kindly invited the clergy, Christian Brothers, and the Sisters of Kalgoorlie and Boulder, also the pupils of the convents and college, to a rhatinee given by himself and his talented company in the Kalgoorlie Town Hall. The play produced was ‘ The Parish Priest,’ and it was thoroughly enjoyed by all present. : f Premier Scaddan, of Western Australia, telegraphed to Brother Sebastian at New Norcia: Have learned with deepest sorrow of decease of Bishop Torres, by which not only the Catholic community, but the whole of our State has suffered irreparable loss.’ To this telegram Brother Sebastian replied: ‘The Benedictine community, Marist Brothers, and ■ all in New Norcia highly appreciate your .kind sympathy with us in the loss of our illustrious Bishop.’ Captain Jaswant Singh, aide-de-camp to his Highness the Maharajah of Patiala, India, was a visitor to the Bendigo show. He was introduced to the company at the luncheon in the show grounds, and on behalf of the society Mr. Sternberg, M.L.C., extended to him a hearty welcome. Captain Jaswant Singh, in acknowledging the toast of his health; stated that the Maharajah of Patiala is now in France at the head of his regiment of 30,000 Indian soldiers, whose services he had placed at the service of the Imperial Government. This intimation was received with loud applause. - A few Sundays ago (says the Catholic Press ) a visitor called on Rev. Father Robinson and asked to be allowed to present the stained-glass window which will surmount the main door of his beautiful new church. The donor wishes the gift to be received anonymously. This splendid gift represents , a sum of £6OO. The window has already been designed by a very eminent artist, and will represent the famous Battle of Lepanto. Apart from the eloquent testimony of personal devotion to Our Lady of Victories, this gift should inspire some other wealthy Catholics to go and do likewise. We are sure the other windows will be subscribed for, also the Stations of the Cross. Widespread regret was expressed when the death of the Rev. James O’Reilly, of St. Fiacre’s Church, Leichhardt, was made known (says the Sydney Freeman). For over two months Father O’Reilly had been receiving medical treatment, and despite his physical sufferings, the devoted priest, thought only of the welfare of his parishioners, and insisted on looking after their spiritual requirements. In spite of the fact that he had spent several weeks in the hospital, Father O’Reilly, far from well, attended the Communion breakfast of the Catholic Societies at Leichhardt, recently, and left the function to go into Lewisham Hospital, where he passed -peacefully away on October 20. Deceased was born in Cavan, Ireland, 50 years ago, and was ordained to the priesthood in All Hallows’ College, Dublin, and soon afterwards came to Sydney, when.' he labored at St. Benedict’s, George street- West, Bookwood, Gosford, Cobargo, and for about 15 years at Leichhardt.
