Hamilton
(From an occasional correspondent.)
. An invitation was extended the parishioners to attend an evening at St. Mary’s Catholic Club Rooms on October 2, when debates were held by club members on subjects allotted to them. There was not as good an attendance as might have, been expected, but those who were there took a keen interest in the discussions, and showed their appreciation by frequent applause. The first subject for debate was— ‘ Why is it that Catholics do not aspire to public honors V Mr. Lafferty, sen., opened in a very able manner, and dealt with the subject from various viewpoints. He was followed by Mr. F. J. Pryor, who in the course of his speech made some very telling points. In the next debate—' Would New Zealand benefit as a whole by the war?’—Mr. M. McCarthy opened in the affirmative, getting in some strong arguments. In reply, Mr. T. Kelly made a very convincing speech. Several other speakers also look part in the discussions. During the evening Very Rev.
Dean Darby handed over to the club a splendid set of volumes The International Library of Famous Literaturepresented by twenty parishioners as the nucleus of a club library, and collected by Mr. Pryor. Other books are also being secured. Altogether a very enjoyable evening was spent.
