Our Palmerston North correspondent writes: ‘A Novena of Masses for the happy repose of the soul of the late Rev. Father Kehoe, who, for some time labored in this parish with the late Rev. Father Costello, will commence on Saturday next. At a recent meeting of the Italian Assembly a member, M. Lacchi Venturi, having referred to the third centenary of St. Camille Lellis, the benefactor of the Roman people, Professor Frazette, a member of the minority and a Mason of high grade, made an effort to protest against the acknowledgment of the saint’s useful work. However, another Catholic member, Martiro, replied to'his attack by a learned and historical speech, in which he recalled the fact that St. Camille de Lellis was the powerful reorganiser of all Roman philanthropy and hospital work, and that he restored two great hospitals, both from a moral and hygienic point of view, and that he left his spiritual sons as worthy successions, to whom is due, amongst other excellent works, the inauguration of the • first chamber of disinfection in Rome. The speech was loudly applauded by M. Martire’s colleagues. •
