ARCHDIOCESE OF WELLINGTON

His Grace Archbishop O’Shea leaves Wellington next Friday on a visit to Fiji. He will be absent about six weeks.

Mr. George Girling-Butcher, organising secretary of the New Zealand Catholic Federation, returned to Wellington on Sunday after a lengthy and successful campaign in Otago and Southland.

Mr. W. C. Gasquoine, general manager of the State Mines Department, will retire from that position in about a month’s time. Mr. Gasquoine has been connected with the State Coal Mines Department for several years. He had considerable experience in the coal industry on the West Coast prior to taking up his residence in Wellington, many years ago. After settling down here he was engaged in the coal trade for some time, and subsequently assumed the general managership of the State coal mines.

A very enjoyable euchre party in aid of St. Francis’s Church funds, was held at Cliff House, Island Bay, on Wednesday night. In spite of the boisterous weather there was a large attendance. The winners of the euchre prizes were Mrs. Carpenter and Rev. Father Peoples and the consolation prizes by Mrs. Chamberlain and Mr. King. The following ladies and gentlemen contributed items to a musical programme Miss and Miss May Evett, pianoforte duet : Mrs. Evett, sen., Mrs. Evett, jun., vocal duet; Miss Dibbly, song; Mrs. Evett, song: Messrs. F. Whitaker and Green, songs; and Mr. Illingworth, musical monologue. Mrs. Eliott acted as pianiste, and Messrs. Whitaker and Ivrohn as joint secretaries.

St. Anne’s Choir, under the conductorship of Mr. W. Gamble, gave a sacred concert in St. Anne’s Church on last Sunday evening, in aid of the organ fund. Miss K. Henderson was organist, the soloists being Misses M. Murray, M. O’Farrell, and Mrs. Readc, Messrs. O. Foote, and A. Foote. The following was the programme: —March, orchestra; chorus, ‘ Kyrie ’ (Gounod); chorus, Gloria (Gounod) solo, Calvary (Rodney), Mr. E. B. L. Reade; chorus, ‘Credo’ (Gounod) ; recitative, ‘ Then shall the eyes of the blind be opened ’ ; air, ‘He shall feed His flock ’ (Handel), Miss Agnes M. Segrief, L. A. 8., A.T.C.L. : chorus, ‘ Sanctus ’ (Gounod) ; chorus, ‘ Benedicts ’ (Gounod) ; solo, selected, Miss Theobald ; chorus, ‘ Agnus Dei’ (Gounod).
