DIOCESE OF DUNEDIN

At a meeting of directors held on Monday night Mr. J. W. Kennedy, sub-editor of the X.Z. Tablet, who has been in unsatisfactory health for some considerable time past, was granted three months’ leave of absence from duty. Our readers will, we are sure, join with us in wishing Mr. Kennedy a speedy and complete restoration.

The fortnightly meeting of the Dunedin branch of the Hibernian Society, held on June 23, was well attended. Correspondence was received from the Otago Lodge of Druids conveying an invitation to a social evening on Wednesday, July-1, which was accepted. The St. Joseph’s Men’s Club also sent an invitation to spend a social evening on Monday, July 6. A good muster of Hibernians is desired on both occasions in order to make the evenings enjoyable. On Sunday, June 21, over 100 members of the branch approached the Holy Table at the Church of the Sacred Heart, North-East Valley. The Rev. Father Buckley officiated, and preached an eloquent discourse on the benefits, spiritual and temporal, to be derived from membership of the Hibernian Society. He.urged all the young men present who were not already members to join, and to

do so at once. After Mass, the members marched in regalia to the schoolroom, when an excellent repast was prepared for them by the Valley ladies, which was much appreciated, especially as some of the communicants had walked over three miles from their homes to the church. After justice had been done to the good things placed before them, Bro. J. J. Marlow, district deputy, moved a hearty vote of thanks to the ladies for their kindness. The Rev. Father Buckley replied on behalf of the ladies. He hoped that on the next occasion the attendance of members would be still larger.
