OBITUARY
MRS. MARGARET HERRING, PALMERSTON NORTH. - The many friends of the family will learn with sincere regret of the death of Mrs. Herring, formerly of the Kairauga, and latterly residing in Andrew Young street, Palmerston North. The sad event occurred while the deceased lady was on a visit to her daughter, Mrs. Kennedy, wife of Mr. M. J. Kennedy, manager and secretary of the Palmerston North Gas Company. She had been in ill-health at Easter, suffering from heart weakness, but was apparently much better until Monday, when she was again indisposed, death taking place suddenly on Tuesday, April 21. Her son, Rev. A. T. Herring, S.M., of Wellington, had been on a visit to his mother on Monday, April 20, and was so satisfied that she was out of danger that he returned to Wellington by the midday train on Tuesday, only to receive the sad news of her death on arriving in Wellington. The late Mrs. Herring was 72 years of age, and arrived in New Zealand in 1899, settling at Kairanga, where her husband, who predeceased her eleven years ago, was engaged in farming. After her husband’s death she came to reside in town, and was very generally respected by a large circle of friends, who will be genuinely sorry to hear of her death. The deceased lady had been for many years a well known and familiar figure at St. Patrick’s Church, and had identified herself actively with all the good works of the "parish. Her life had been one of the sincerest and deepest piety, she being practically a daily communicant for some years. She leaves a family of three sons and two daughters—Rev. Fathers A. T. Herring and H. J. Herring, of. Wellington, and Mr. F. Herring, of Palmerston North, Sister Evangel iste (Convent of Mercy, Wellington), and Mrs. M. J. Kennedy, of Palmerston North. ■ , • -{.t The funeral left the residence of Mr. M. J. Kennedy on Thursday April 23, shortly after 8 o’clock, for St. Patrick’s Church, where a Solemn Requiem Mass
was celebrated at 9 o’clock in the presence of a large congregation. ' The celebrant was Rev. Father A. T. Herring, S.M. (eldest son of deceased) deacon, Ven. Archdeacon Devoy, S.M. ; subdeacon, Rev. Father H. J. Herring, S.M. (Newtown), youngest son of the deceased and the master of ceremonies, the Rev. Father Kelly (Palmerston). choir consisted of a number of the clergy, Very Rev. Father Keogh, S.M., B.A. (Hastings), presiding at the organ. The following clergy were also present: Very Rev. Dean McKenna (New Plymouth), Very Rev. Dean Power (Hawera), Very Rev. Father J. A. O’Connell, S.M. (Superior of the Marist Missionaries), Rev. Fathers F. G. Maples (Stratford), McManus (Palmerston), T. Cahill (Eltham), M. O’Bcirne (Inglewood), P. W. Tymons, S.M. (Thorndon), B. J. Gondringer, S.M., M.A., of St. Patrick’s College, J. Barra, S.M. (Te Aro), M. D. Doolaghty (Marton), M. Dwyer (Feilding), S. Kincaid. After Mass the funeral, which was a very large one, left the church for the cemetery. The service at the graveside was conducted by Rev. IT. J. Herrin?. S.M. On the Wednesday evening the whole of the employees of the gas works marched in a body to the residence of Mr. M. J. Kennedy, and expressed their sympathy by placing a beautiful wreath on the coffin. The office and fitting staff of the gas company also showed their respect by forwarding a beautiful wreath. The family received numerous expressions of condolence from all over the Dominion, including one from his Grace Archbishop O’Shea, Meanee Seminary, St. Patrick’s College, the Marist Chapter (Wellington), and Dean Regnault (Provincial).. The members of St. Vincent de Paul Society received Holy Communion in a body on Sunday, April 26, offering same for repose of the soul of deceased. —R.l.P.
