LIFE-SAVING PROFICIENCY.

PRESENTATIONS OF AWARDS AT ST. PATRICK’S COLLEGE. ' (From our Wellington correspondent.) At St. Patrick’s College on Saturday evening a very pleasant function toon place, during the course of which the awards of the Royal Life-Saving Society secured by pupils of the college were presented. Among those present were Messrs. G. S. Gill (chairman of the Wellington Centre of the Society), W. C. Collier (hon. secretary), T. Shields, G. H. Neal, and W. H. Ellis (hon. examiners). Rev. Father Eccleton, in presenting the awards, laid stress on the good work which the society was doing, and spoke of the unselfish manner in which the 'officers of the society gave themselves up to their work. He hoped that the boys would take notice of this unselfishness, and, in their after life,, endeavor to assist their fellow-men in like manner. The Rector (the Very Rev. Dr. Kennedy) said that he was very proud of the enthusiasm which the boys 'had displayed in life-saving, and of . the great number of awards which had been won, and expressed the wish that next year, instead of fifty awards being gained, his college might treble or quadruple that number. Mr. J. A. Duffy, who is responsible for the intro’duction of the society’s work in the college, received mention for his good work, the boys cheering when Father Eccleton spoke of his services. Mr. G. S. Hill, on behalf of his society, expressed pleasure at being able .to'witness such a large number of awards presented.
