FOOTBALL. CELTIC CLUB, TIMARU. The Celtic Club held its ninth annual meeting in the club rooms on the evening of the 20th. ult. The meeting was controlled by the club's president, Rev. Father Murphy, and attended by a large number of both players and supporters. The president congratulated the players on having won the senior competition. Several members also spoke encouragingly; and the players commented favorably on the pleasure derived " from meeting the other teams in the competition. The report and financial statement having been discussed at length, was unanimously adopted, and was considered highly satisfactory, showing a substantial credit balance. * Several new members, who will materially strengthen the playing capacity of the club, were duly elected. The St. John’s Ambulance Brigade was the subject of much favorable comment, and after eulogising the sterling services rendered, a donation of £1 Is was unanimously voted to that institution. Besides winning the senior competition, the* club had the honor of having five senior players— T. Lynch, G. Niall, W. Dalton, M. Darcy, and J. Fitzgerald—representing South Canterbury. T. Lynch also played in the island south v. north, his good work and superior play , in this match meriting him a place in the team which toured America. During the year two socials were held, the profits from which, amounting to nearly £3O, went towards improving the Marist Brothers’ School. The club has also donated a' stained-glass window to the new church
in memory of Thomas Hertnan, a highly respected and most popular player, who met with a fatal accident on the football field some time ago. ~ T - The election of office-bearers for the ensuing year resulted as follows:—Patron, Very Rev. The usual couiTesy to the chair brought to a close a very enthusiastic meeting. • CELTIC CLUB, OAMARU. The Celtic Football Club held its first annual meeting on Sunday night, some 35 supporters being present. The jersey adopted was green and black. Meehan, J. Fitzgerald; deputy captain, Mr. R. Young; coach, Mr. J. Toohey. The opening day was fixed for April 26, on Tokara Park. Forty-five members have been enrolled, and this is a capital start for the new club. TENNIS. In last .Saturday’s competition matches (writes our Christchurch correspondent) the Cathedral Club teams, although playing against much more practised combinations, scored remarkably well, being defeated by very narrow margins. McNamara (C.), 9-5; Steere (A.) beat Cronin (C.), 9-5; Haynes (A.) beat McKeon (C.), 9-0; Cahill (C.) beat Allison (A.), 9-6.
