Ashburton
(From our own correspondent.) Favored with good weather harvesting operations are now practically over in this county. Though not up to early expectations, the yield taken all round is a good average one. The published list of passes in the respective classes for teachers’ examinations in the Canterbury district contains the names of pupils of our local convent school—namely, Misses K. Fitzgerald and B. Hurley. Mr;- T. M. Brophy, of the local Post Office staff and a prominent member of our Catholic Young Men’s Club, was successful in passing the two subjects for which he sat at the recent Civil Service examinations. Mr. J. J. Moriarty, formerly representative for the N .Z. Tahiti, left Ashburton on Wednesday of last week, after spending a few days amongst his people prior to his departure for Melbourne, where he enters on a business career. The Catholic Young Men’s Club held an 1 At home ’ in the clubrooms on Thursday of last week. Owing to the inclemency of the weather the attendance was not large. The chair was occupied by Mr. T. Purcell (vice-president). The usual procedure for such gatherings was followed—progressive euchre, musical items, etc., refreshments being handed round during the interval. The progressive euchre prizes were won by Miss K. Nealon and Mr. D. Fitzgerald. The musical portion of the programme was contributed to by Miss T. Hicks and Messrs. Duncan MacDonald and Y. Madden; Miss K. Nealon playing the accompaniments. A very happy and pleasant gathering was brought to a close with the singing of ‘ Auld lang syne.’
