DIOCESE OF CHRISTCHURCH
(From our own correspondent.) March 2. On the application of Mr. A. F. Wright, his Honor Mr. Justice Denniston last week admitted Mr. Peter P. J. Amodeo as a solicitor of the Supreme Court. There was Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament at the Cathedral from the 11 o’clock Mass on last Sunday, with the customary procession and Benediction' in the evening. His Lordship the Bishop left on last Saturday on an episcopal visitation of the Westland portion of the diocese. His Lordship is expected to be absent from Christchurch for about a month. In the course of his instruction on Sunday last at Mass in the Church of Our Lady Star of the Sea, Sumner, the Very Rev. Chancellor Price, Adm., treated briefly of the doctrine of Papal Infallibility, lucidly showing what it means and what it does not mean. He spoke 'of the entirely wrong views held on the subject* by Anglicans of the advanced school especially, and undoubtedly by many others, false impressions which could be removed in ten minutes were such people sincere in their inquiry and open to conviction. The sale of tickets for the St. Patrick’s Day concert, the proceeds of which are to be devoted to assist the Nursing Sisters to establish their hospital, is being energetically carried on by the ladies of the city parishes and others, and it is hoped their efforts will be amply rewarded. The highest price (three shillings) admits to the dress circle or orchestral stalls of the Theatre Royal, and - seats may be reserved at the Dresden Music Warehouse without additional cost. The proceeds of the recent appeal made by St. Patrick’s branch of the Hibernian Society for the relief of the then existing, distress in Dublin, and forwarded some time ago to his Grace the Archbishop of Dublin, have been acknowledged in the following terms in a letter received by the secretary of the branch : ‘Dear sir,—l am directed by his Grace, the Archbishop to acknowledge receipt of your letter and cheque for £43 7s, sent'-on November 14 last. His Grace wishes me to express his appreciation of the generous efforts of ■ St. Patrick’s'branch of the Hibernian Society, Christchurch,
to assist in the unhappy state of distress here. I"remain, very.faithfully'yours, Michael Dwyer, secretary.’
