OBITUARY
MRS. MICHAEL RYAN, BROADFIELDS. It was with sincere regret that we learned of the death of Mrs. Ryan, wife of Mr. Michael Ryan, of Broadfields, and much sympathy will be extended to her husband and family in their sad bereavement. She was queen of a happy home, and in that home her influence was felt amongst her loving subjects, whom she ruled wisely and guided piously. She was the mother of fifteen children, nine sons and six daughters. Three children have predeceased her. Two of her daughters are Sisters of the Mission, and her eldest son, Mr. M. F. Ryan, is chairman of the Selwyn County Council. She was the best of Catholics, attending Mass regularly up to a few weeks before her death, when her last illness set in and prevented her, and so she will be missed from her place in church. She was a frequent communicant, in fact her whole life was a preparation for death. She received the last rites of the Church and was frequently" visited by Rev. Father O’Connor and the good Sisters, and when passing away there knelt at. her bedside the members of her family who, with Father O’Connor, recited the -prayers for *the dying. She, was a loving wife, a model mother, a good, kind, and charitable neighbor to all. She was born in Borris-
okane, County Tipperary, 72 years ago, and arrived in New Zealand in 1863, so that she was just fifty years in the Dominion. She was married in 1865, and since then had resided at Broadfields. The funeral took place on Monday, January 12. A Requiem Mass was celebrated by Father O’Connor, .there being present in the sanctuary Very Rev. Dean- Hyland, Rev. Dr. Kennedy, and Rev. Father Walshe. The funeral was a very large one, many coming long distances to pay their last tribute of respect to the deceased lady, and to extend their sympathy to the bereaved husband and family. —R.l.P.
