(From our own correspondent.) January IG. Very Rev, Mgr. O’Leary preached in St. Mary’s Church on last Sunday evening. Messrs. F. J. Shanley, J. Tymons, and C. M. Morgan have been elected vice-presidents of the St. Vincent de Paul Society lor the ensuing twelve months. His Grace Archbishop Redwood arrived here on Monday. He was present at the meeting of the St. Vincent de Paul Society in the evening. His Grace addressed the members, congratulated them on the year’s work, and wished them success in the future. The annual meeting of the Hibernian Society was held on Tuesday evening in St. Joseph’s Hall. Bro. A. J. Fitzgerald presided, and a large number of members was present. The election of officers, etc., for the ensuing term resulted:-^President, Bro. A. J. I itzgerald, 8.P.; vice-president, Bro. D.-Dwyer; secretary, Bro. W. R. Setter, B.S. (re-elected); treasurer, Bro. W. McTubbs, B.T. (re-elected); assistant secretary, Bro. W. J. McGonagle; warden, Bro. C. Morgan; guardian, Bro. J. Cronin; sick visitors, Bros. A. MeWilliam and J. W. E. Miles; auditors, Bro. A. J. Fitzgerald, 8.P., and J. W. E. Miles; delegates to the district meeting to be held at Auckland next month, Bros. W. R. Setter, 8.5., and D. Dwyer; delegates to the Friendly Societies’ Council, Bros.' W. R. Setter, A. J. Fitzgerald, and-W. J. McGonagle ; delegate to the Friendly Societies’ Dispensary, Bro. A. J. Fitzgerald. One member was initiated and three members were reported to be on the sick list. Sincere regret was expressed at the death of Bro. Selby Morton, an honorary member of the society, who was highly esteemed. To show their respect for the deceased, the officers of the branch had acted as pall-bearers, and a large number of members was present at the funeral. After the business before the meeting had been concluded, the gathering adjourned to Mr. H. P. Muller’s Tea-rooms, where the annual re-union was celebrated. Kindred societies were well represented. A very choice repast was provided. The toast list was as follows: —‘The Pope and the King,’ proposed by the chairman : ‘ The Executive of the H.A.C.B.’S.,’ proposed by Bro. Keogh, responded to by Bro. Setter: ‘Kindred Societies,’ proposed by Dean Holley, and responded to by the visiting delegates : ‘ Dispensary and Friendly Societies’ Council,’ proposed by Bro. McWilliams, responded to by chairman Bro. W. H. Flyger and secretary Bro. W. R.
Setter 4 Newly-elected Officers, ’ proposed by Bro. W. 11. Flyger, and responded* to by the officers. Other toasts proposed were ‘The Clergy,’ The Press,’ and ‘ The -Cadies.’ The toasts were interspersed with musical items. When the toast of ‘ The Dispensary and Friendly Societies’ Council ’ was honored, all the speakers referred in eulogistic terms to the benefits to be derived therefrom. A popular item was that which was introduced by Very Rev. Dean Holley, who in a neat speech presented Bro. A. J. Fitzgerald with a gold medal suitably inscribed, in recognition ' of his efforts to increase the membership. The medal was given by Bro. W. R. Setter (secretary), and Very Rev. Dean Holley kindly promised to donate a similar prize for the same purpose this year.
