Temuka

(From our own correspondent.) October 6. A concert has been arranged to take place in Kerrytown on the 23rd inst., when the drawing of the art union in aid of the convent and school will take place. Yesterday being the first Sunday of October, Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament took place after the 10.30 o’clock Mass, and was continued throughout the day. In the evening the usual procession was held in which the Children of Mary took part. Rev. Fathers McCarthy, S.M., and A. Herring, S.M., Marist Missioners, who have been spending a few days in Temuka, since the conclusion of the Timaru mission, left on Saturday, the former for Geraldine, and

the latter for Waimate, where they, opened missions on Sunday. " ' ' The town clock, which is located in the tower of the local Catholic church, has, in the past, been kept in repair by the local clergy and parishioners. Recently Rev. Father Kerley, S.M., made application to the Borough Council for a donation towards the upkeep, and that body unanimously voted an annual sum of £5. ■■■ : ' On Tuesday evening last the members of the Catholic Club held a very successful smoke concert (to mark a the close of the current session), at which there was a record attendance of members. A very long toast list, , interspersed with songs, recitations, etc., was gone through, and the proceedings were most enthusiastic . throughout. Special reference was made by several members to the painstaking manner in which the president (Mr. J. Scott) and the secretary (Mr. R. Connell) had discharged their duties, and special thanks were tendered to the clergy who had done much during the session to make it so successful and enjoyable. Many years ago an attempt was made to open a branch of the H.A.C.B. Society in Temuka, but success did not crown the efforts of the promoters, the chief obstacle at the time being that they were unable to secure the services of a doctor. It is with pleasure I am now able to announce that this difficulty has been overcome, and the services of a doctor and also a chemist are available. .Another attempt is to be made to start a branch, and it has been arranged to call the preliminary meeting in about a fortnight’s time. I have no doubt the meeting will be a great success, and that the promoters will be well rewarded for their efforts. Tiraarts (From our own correspondent.) October 6. The second anniversary of the opening of our handsome and imposing church was celebrated yesterday. Special music was rendered at the Miss® Cantata, celebrated at 11 o’clock by Very Rev. Dean Tubman. The Very Rev. Father O’Connell, S.M., in addition to preaching on ‘ Rosary' Sunday ’ at the Mass, also delivered the special, anniversary sermon to a crowded congregation at the evening devotions. Among the additions and fittings added to .the church property since the opening, may be mentioned the boys’ sacristy, power-house, organ, Stations of the. Cross, sanctuary lamp, high and side altars, etc. On Thursday evening last the members of the Young Men’s Club paid a visit to the Waimate Young Men’s Club, and were hospitably entertained .in the latter’s clubrooms. Mr. O’Brien (president of the Waimate club) presided, and was supported by the Rev, Father Aubry (Waimate) and Rev. Brother Egbert (Timaru). Toasts were proposed or responded to by the Rev. Father Aubry and Rev. Brother Egbert, and Messrs. O’Brien, Hickey, M. Lyons, McCarthy, J. Sim, and J. Quinn (Waimate), and Messrs. Dunne, Quinn,: Doyle, Duggan, O’Halloran (president), and Venning (Timaru). Songs were rendered by Messrs. Bonacino, D. Doyle, and another, and an excellent recitation was given by Mr. McGuire. The proceedings were of an enthusiastic nature. " In the Sacred Heart Convent there was recently, installed one of the largest and most up-to-date heating systems. to be found in the Dominion. The mode of heating adopted is low-pressure, hot water, the * Ideal ’ system being considered most efficient. - The engineers have just completed the final tests, and everything is working very satisfactorily. The hygenic advantages of a low-pressure water-heating plant are not shared by any other system of heating, and the fact that this method of heating is adopted nowadays by every hospital and similar establishment is conclusive evidence of the value attached to it by the medical profession. The system at the convent is set to maintain a temperature of 60deg. Fahr. inside, when the outside

registers 30deg.. and gives a' mean water ■ temperature at the'boiler of 150 deg. Fahr. There are no cold rooms, entrance nails, corridors, or dormitories- 1 -the whole space throughout the large building is evenly warmed by 83 radiators, a thermometer varying but a degree or two at any- point in the interior of the convent. No sudden fall in the room temperature can take place during the night, for the fuel capacity of the boiler is sufficient to v maintain a fire from eight to twelve hours without attention. No more fuel is used than the amount needed to warm the air to the degree desired. The radiators are easily regulated in each room, and any number can be turned on or off by a valve at each radiator, without affecting the perfect operation of the remainder of the system. Messrs. Lusk and Moriarty supervised the installation . of this plant.
