DIOCESE OF DUNEDIN

__-■ _ The parish schools re-opened after the mid-winter holidays on Monday. Two fine statuesthe Sacred Heart and the Immaculate Conceptionwhich were erected last week in the Church of Mary Immaculate, Kaikorai, were blessed in Sunday morning. The former was presented by Mesdames Cornish, Mowat, and Culling, and the latter by Mrs. Kennedy. A very successful euchre tournament, in aid of the local stall at the forthcoming bazaar, was held in the Sacred Heart School, North-east Valley, on Friday evening, when there was a large attendance. The lady's prize was won by Miss Collins, and the gentleman's by Mr. Gallien. ,- . On Monday evening St. Joseph's Men's Club held a mock parliamentary election. There was a fair attendance, and much amusement was created by the various speeches. The evening was most enjoyable, and on the whole the candidates acquitted themselves very well. On next Monday evening a smoke concert will be held. A goodly number of Hibernians from St. Joseph's branch, Dunedm, journeyed to Mosgiel last Sunday They were met at Holy Cross College by Rev. Father Liston (Rector) and about thirty ladies and gentlemen of the district, including the Mayor (Mr. A. F Quelch), who were in favor of the formation of a branch' The meeting took place in the college library, and Rev. Father Lis;on, who presided, explained that owing to one important matter having been overlooked the branch could not bo opened that day. He expressed his regret at the disappointment of all, especially of the Dunedm visitors, and asked the district deputy (Bro J. J Marlow) and the officers of St. Joseph's branch to address the meeting. Bro. Marlow delivered a very able address. He pointed out the benefits resulting from membership, making special reference to the fact that it was a Catholic society as well, and although founded by Irishmen, it welcomed to its ranks all nationalities, asking them only in return to cherish the memory of Ireland. He especially welcomed the ladies and strongly exhorted them to join also. The ladies in other places, especially in Wellington, had done remarkable work in the cause of Hibernianism, and he trusted the Mosgiel ladies would emulate their good example. Bros. T. J. Hussey (president), Geo. Bevis (vice-president), and J. Dougherty (past-president) also addressed the meeting. Rev. Father Liston then announced that another meeting would probably be held on July 27, and also that some parents of the college students were already favorable towards their sons becoming members. The others would be communicated with, and he believed a considerable number of replies favorable to the idea would be received. The Rector then graciously invited all present to partake of some light refreshments, after which the visitors were shown over the fine college and grounds.
