Palmerston North

(From our travelling correspondent.)

A pleasing ceremony took place at the Railway Hotel, Palmerston North, one evening last week when the permanent guests assembled to say good-bye to Mr. and Mrs. John Hurley and family, who are giving up business there, and to welcome the new proprietors, Mr. and Mrs. Owen, late of Pahiatua. Mr. Hawkins, who was voted to the chair, expressed on behalf of the guests the deep regret they felt at the departure from amongst them of Mr. Hurley and family, and wished them every success wherever they intended to reside. Mr. Trueman then welcomed the incoming tenants, and expressed the hope that the golden opinions they had won in Pahiatua would be even enhanced during their residence in Palmerston.' Messrs. Staunton and J. J. Moriarty also spoke highly of the hospitality and generosity of the departing proprietors, and the toast of Mr. and Mrs. Hurley, and family' was enthusiastically honored. A programme of musical items, etc., brought the evening to a close.
