Ellerslie
(From an occasional correspondent.)
On Wednesday, May 14, a very enjoyable social function was held in the Ellerslie parish hall, in aid of funds for the Catholic church at Ellerslie. There was a very large attendance, including visitors from Auckland, as well as from the districts surrounding Ellerslie. A very successful progressive euchre tournament, which was carried out under the direction of Mr. F. G. J. Temm, occupied the first part of the evening, and was greatly enjoyed by the participants. It was pointed out at the commencement that prizes would be presented to the lady and gentleman scoring the most number of games, and each competitor was very keen in an endeavor to carry .off the prize. At the conclusion of the tournament refreshments were handed round. While refreshments were being partaken of, Mr. Temm announced the result of the euchre tournament, and made the presentation as follows: —Lady’s prize, Mrs. H. Fleming; gentleman’s, Mr. H. Dimmer. During the evening the Rev. Father Tormey addressed those present, and thanked one and all for their attendance, thereby contributing to the success of the evening. There were also present during the early part of the evening Rev. Fathers Furlong and O’Doherty. The committee who were responsible for the great success of this function—Mesdames Gavin and Fergus, and Messrs. Armstrong, Kelly, Sexton, Pohlen, and’Temm —are to be congratulated on the admirable manner in which the necessary arrangements were carried out, and on making the function a financial success.
