(From our own correspondent.) ;„; '- May 8. On Saturday, May .4, a mission was commenced here by the Very Rev. Father O'Connell, S.M., and Rev. Father McCarthy, S.M. So far the attendances at all the services have been large, taxing to the utmost the seating accommodation. The early Masses have been particularly well attended, large numbers receiving Holy Communion each morning. At the recent borough election in Hokitika two prominent members of St. Mary's congregation were elected to seats on the Council. These were Mr. W. N. Warren (president of St. Mary's Club) and Mr. W. J. Jeffries. Mr. W. J. Jeffries also obtained a seat on the Harbor Board and the Charitable/Aid Board.

(From an occasional correspondent.) May 13. The first of a series of euchre, tournaments was given in St. George's Hall on Thursday evening, May 8, and was very largely attended. After a keen competition the lady's prize was won by Mr. Collicoat, who played as a lady partner, and the gentleman's by Mr. W. Maher. At the conclusion of the tournament a dainty supper was served. The committee are.to h? congratulated upon the success which crowned their work, especially. Misses Mellett and J. Corbett, and Messrs. J. Moran and C. Coakley.
