Timaru

(From our own correspondent.) February 20. Since the re-opening of the schools the Very Rev. Dean Tubman is personally conducting the Sunday schools of the parish. An artistic set of Stations of the Cross have just been erected in the new church. The paintings are the work of a French artist, and are the same size as those installed in St. Mary's Cathedral, Sydney. The figures are life-like, and well grouped. Mr. J. P. Kalaugher, director of technical education under the Auckland Board, is just now paying a

short.visit to Timaru. He is a native of South Canterbury and for many years took a prominent part in all matters connected with the Church. Mr. Patrick Mahoney, secretary of the Hibernian Society, and a son of Mr. D. Mahoney, has just received word that he was successful in the first division of the accountancy examination held in connection with the N.Z. University. A meeting of all Catholics is convened for Thursday evening next in the Brown Street Hall, the object being to form a branch of the Catholic Federation of New Zealand. Speaking at the 11 o'clock Mass yesterday the Rev. Father Smyth stated the objects of the association and the necessity for the united action on the part of Catholics; particularly to combat the efforts of the Bible-in-State Schools League. He emphasised the non-party attitude of the federation, and stated that it was the duty of all Catholics, irrespective of age or sex, to join its ranks.
