DIOCESE OF DUNEDIN

The parish schools in the city and suburbs re-opened on Monday. • There was Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament on Sunday at St. Joseph's Cathedral from the eleven o'clock Mass until after Vespers. In the evening there was the usual procession, followed by Benediction of tho Blessed Sacrament. Cyril Hastings, Harold Carter, Joseph Newman, and Alex. Moyiniian, pupils of the Christian Brothers' School, Dunedin, passed the junior Civil Service examination, and aiso qualified for senior free places. These were the only candidates presented from the school. The pupils of the Catholic schools of the city, South Dunedin, Port Chalmers, with a number of children from the St. Vincent de Paul Orphanage, were favored with ideal weather for their annual outing, which was held at Evansdale on Tuesday. A special train, consisting of 16 carriages, and taking 900 excursionists, left Dunedin shortly after 9 o'clock. The committee of management had made very complete arrangements for the entertainment of the children, and the result was that everything passed off most successfully. Among those who accompanied the children were Rev. Father Delany (South Dunedin), Rev. Fathers Corcoran and Foley (St. Joseph's Cathedral), the Christian Brothers, and a goodly number of their parents and friends. Those who assisted in organising the outing, and superintending the carrying out of the sports programme were Messrs. J. J. Salmon (secretary), Cant well, A. McDonald (handicapper and starter), o'Sullivan, and Merchant, and to these gentlemen much credit is due. Mesdames Jackson, Salmon, Stone, and Swanson did their part by looking after the catering, and attending to the wants of the younger children. The various events in the sports' programme created a good deal of interest, especially the schools' championship, which was won by J. McCarthy. The return journey was commenced about half-past 5 o'clock, the train arriving in Dunedin shortly after 7. In the opinion of all who took part in the outing, it was most enjoyable in every way.
