ITEMS OF SPORT

GENERAL. A very enjoyable picnic was held by the boys of the M.B.S. Junior Cadets a few days ago on the giounds of Mr. Win. Connor, of Raonka (writes our Auckland correspondent). The greater part of the day was taken up by the annual sports of the company, the result of the events being as follows;—100yds open—J. Mellins 1, J. McKay 2. 75 yards—F. A turn 1, L. Donovan 2. 220 yards—T. Mullins 1, J. Kay 2, C. O’Leary 3. Two legged race—F. Crotty and P. Corliss 1, J. Greener and E. Crotty 2. Obstacle race— W. Molan 1. Piggy-back race—W. Mol and F. Atum 1, J. The refreshments of the Brothers and officers were kindly looked after by Misses A. Lloyd, L. Roche, and T. Quirk. After a very successful day’s outing the boys returned home in the best of spirits. Favored with beautiful weather, the Catholic picnic at the Riccarton Racecourse, combined with the school children’s treat on Boxing Day, was a most successful and enjoyable event (writes our Christchurch correspondent). Special trams left the vicinity of the Cathedral at about nine o’clock, conveying large numbers of pleasure-seekers, many others reaching the domain from yanous directions during the day. His Lordship the Bishop Very Rev. Father Price, D.C., Adm., and others of the clergy were present. Music, discoursed by a brass band, added to the Measure of those present, The outing was promoted and managed# by a strong committee, composed of members of the* Marist Brothers Old Boys’ Association, who with the energetic secretary (Mr. W. J. Barnett) made perfect arrangements, and deserve every credit for the manner "in which these were earned out. The children were specially provided for in regard both to refreshments and amusements.
