Gisborne
(From our own correspondent.) December 22. The children of the Catholic schools were the guests of Rev. Father Lane yesterday afternoon at the picture matinee in the Opera House. The popular representative of the Tablet, Mr. Moriarty, was in Gisborne during the week, and did good business in the interest of the paper. At Mass on Sunday Rev. Father Lane voiced the sentiments of the Catholic community in the expressions of regret at the departure of the Sisters of Mercy from Gisborne. These excellent nuns have conducted the parish schools during the past .five years with most gratifying results. The Sisters of the Order of St. Joseph are to take over the schools after the Christmas vacation. ~ A large and enthusiastic meeting was held at the Royal Hotel to , consider the question of holding St. Patrick’s Day sports in Gisborne next year. Sir James Carroll presided, and after thanking them for electing him to the chair, outlined the objects for which the meeting was called. It was decided to hold the sports, and the date will be decided later. A subscription list was opened and £BO was quickly subscribed by those present, which is a good indication of the enthusiasm displayed for the success of the sports. The following officers were elected:—Patron, Sir James Carroll; president, Rev. Father Lane; vice-presidents. Rev. Father Carron, Messrs. D. J. Barry, C. Neenan, C. Caulton, C. J. Parker, D. J.
