DOMINICAN COLLEGE, TESCHEMAKERS

• Among those present at the college for the closing ceremonies of the scholastic year were Right ’ Rev. Mgr. Mackay, V.G., who distributed the prizes, Rev. E. Lynch, and Mr. E. P. Lee, M.P. The following is the programme, the prizes being distributed at intervals: Chorus, ‘ Eyes of blue piano solo, Nocturne in . B flat (Vincent) violin solo, selected; piano solo, mazurka (Schulkoff), song, ‘Blackbird’s song (Scott) piano solo, ‘ Water song ’ (Esipoff) ; song, - /The owl ’ (Scott); piano solo, Allegro in G (Handel); piano solo, c‘La Fileuse ’ (Raff) chorus, ‘Happy children we.’ ■ The different items were received with applause, the performers showing very careful training in both the vocal and instrumental pieces. . ; / ; : There was evidence, too, of good work in the classes, the pupils gaining distinctions in literature, languages, and mathematics. / The highest distinctions were awarded- to religious knowledge—Christian doctrine;and Bible. , Prizes were also given for the .homely sciences, dressmaking, etc., while it was a noticeable feature - that physical / culture and outdoor games held a prominent place in the school curriculum;' graceful

little ladies coming forward for-first places in batting and bowling. < The programme was brought to a close by the - crowning of the most amiable and popular girl in the school. This distinction was awarded by the votes of her companions to Miss Ethel George. Monsignor Mackay addressed the children, and humorously remarked that it was only on few occasions:.: men were round to be unanimous, but it was rare, very . rare, that the other sex were found to be of one mind on any subject whatever. But here was an exception, the children had one and all given their votes for Miss. George, and this in itself was striking evidence of-the excellent spirit which prevailed in the school spirit of just appreciation, untainted by minor considerations of envy or jealousy. He congratulated the pupils on : ■the'; work they had achieved, and on the beautiful surroundings in-which they worked. There was ample proof that they had availed themselves of their opportunities. Here nothing ■ was neglected, every subject ■ having its place, from the more serious studies of the classroom down to the wielding of the tennis ; racquet and cricket ball. ■ Speaking of the pleasure their entertainment had given him, the rev. speaker said that as people grew older they were harder to please, their standard of excellence was higher, but he could-assure them that he had been greatly pleased with their performance, and thought he might say the same for all those present. In conclusion, lie wished .the children a happy Christmas and pleasant holidays. - :■ -' WM | The following is the prize list: Junior School.—Christian -doctrine, E. Breen. Reading and recitation, R.
