HASTINGS CONVENT SCHOOL

St. Patrick's schoolroom, Hastings, was packed to the doors on the occasion of the -annual concert and distribution of prizes. Very Rev. Father Keogh, presided, and included in the assemblage were his Worship the Mayor, and Sir William and Miss Violet Russell. The concert was a very excellent one, and the manner in which the children acquitted themselves reflected the utmost credit on the Sisters of St. Joseph. The programme opened with a chorus, ' When babies go to school,' by the infants, whose clear fresh voices revealed the hall mark of assiduous training. -The singing was unusually tuneful for such mites, and the audience accorded them a vociferous encore. Similar compliments fell to the junior girls for their rendering, in appropriate attire, of ' Grandmothers,' and to the senior girls, who figured in a song and tableau, ' A scene from fairyland,' of which the beautiful mounting and dressing were special features. A piano solo, 'Tarantella,' by Miss Amy Watts, was also a: very enjoyable item. 'This young lady distinguished herself at the recent Napier and Wellington competitions, and her playing last evening was quite a treat. The most popular item on the programme was a musical comedy' in one act entitled ' A. joke on the toymakeiy which was produced under the direction of Mr. A. A. George. The ; cast of characters was as follows: —Father Santa Claus, Wi Kani; Mother Santa Claus, Molly Aldridge; Bub, Sefton Kirby; Fairy Queen, Pauline Chati'e; Buster ..Brown, Douglas Mclvor; Clown, Joe David; Piccaninnies, J. Honnor; Mother Hubbard, E. Wells; Japanese Doll, A. Poppelwell; Dutch Doll, W. Seed. The children acted their parts with perfect self-possession, and that the piece was thoroughly enjoyed was evidenced by the alternating peals of laughter and rounds of applause with which their efforts were followed. The concert concluded with the chorus ' Green and white' by the boys, after which the prizes were distributed by Miss Violet. Russell. cvi The Mayor, in a short address, congratulated the children on their excellent concert, and urged on them to make the best use of their school days to equip themselves for the battle of life. He concluded by wishing them a very pleasant holiday. .-., Sir William Russell .congratulated the pupils on their past year's work, and paid a high tribute to the good work of the Sisters of St. Joseph.
