ST. DOMINIC’S COLLEGE, DUNEDIN

The annual prize-distribution to the students of . St. Dominic’s College took place in the study hall on Thursday forenoon. The Rev. Father Coffey, Adm., in the unavoidable absence of his Lordship the Bishop, presided, and there was also present Rev. Father McDermott, C.SS.R. A very enjoyable and artistic programme of vocal and instrumental music was given by ■ the students. It is needless to say, considering the reputation which St. Dominic’s College enjoys as a - centre of musical culture, the concert was of a very high order of merit, and reflected credit on teachers and students. . The following was the programme: -—Pizzicato gavotte, ‘ Herz an Herz.’ (Lataan), orchestra; piano solo, ‘ Study in A’ (Czerny), Miss F. O’Driscoll; ‘ Song of Florian,’ Miss I. Burrell; piano solo, ‘ Valse Arabesque’ (Ries-Helmund), Miss N. Lynch; violin ; solo, ‘ Saltarella ’ (Hans-Sitt), Miss C. Millar; song, ‘Blackbird song,’ Miss V. Hannan. In one of the classrooms were shown some very fine specimens of the work of the art students, consisting of oil paintings, water qolors, crayons, etc. These gave evidence of artistic talent of a high order. Other exhibits, but of a different kind, were the attractive samples of work done by the cookery class. This is a feature of girls’ training which had been somewhat neglected in the past, but it is pleasing to know that it is now receiving special attention at St. Dominic’s College. Dressmaking', too, is taught with considerable success. The following was the annual report; The past year has been a record one for the pupils of St. Dominic’s from the Civil Service results in January to the Oxford successes in December. In the School of Music, of the 48 successful candidates, 16 took honors in Trinity College and 7 in the Associated Board; 4 secured the diploma of Licentiate in the Associated Board, 1 Licentiate Trinity College, and 4 Associates. The Art Studio shows work of a particularly high standard. In addition to prize winners amongst resident students, several extern pupils produced excellent specimens of drawing and shading from the cast, water colors, and oils. The pupils, trained on the newest methods of physical culture, reflect credit on the teacher of Swedish drill, Miss Mowat. Domestic arts, especially dressmaking, have received a fair share of the pupils’ time and attention. The number of exhibits in this department is largely due to the skilful teaching of Miss Heley. Cookery on the most up-to-date and scientific lines has also been a notable feature of the scholastic year. Whilst giving close attention to secular studies, religious knowledge has not been neglected, the trophy for that subject being again won by St. Dominic’s. Not in theory only has there been marked improvement. Conduct has shown practical appreciation of the lessons given. We feel confident that the future even more than the present will prove that those lessons have not been learned in vain. Rev. Mother Prioress desires to thank those ladies and gentlemen who very kindly donated medals and prizes. At the conclusion of the distribution of prizes, Rev. Father McDermott, C.SS.R., briefly addressed the students. He expressed his pleasure at being present at such a pleasing ceremony, and congratulated the students on their successes during the year in all branches of knowledge— and secular, and concluded by wishing them a very pleasant vacation. Rev. Father Coffey congratulated the students on \ the very satisfactory report which had been just read. The results of the various examinations were proof of the excellence of the education imparted there. He congratulated the Nuns on the healthy appearance of the girls, for without health they would not be able to attain success in their studies. There would be a parting among the girls at the vacation, as some would not be coming back again to the College; these would be going out into the world, and there show the fruits of the teaching they had received in the College. Girls

are very good when under the eyes of their superior, but they should not forget that they are always under the Eye of a Superior, whether in or out of school, and that they cannot hide anything from Him. When the girls' went out into the world they should show by their conduct that there was something in religious education, for there was no use saying they were educated convent if their conduct was no better than if they were educated outside of it. By their demeanor they \ should justify their teaching,> and reflect credit on themselves and on the good. Sisters of St. Dominic. In conclusion, he wished them pleasant holidays, a happy Christmas, and trusted that those returning to the school, would come back in good health and strength to renew their studies for another year. ” Prize List.
