Hokitika
(From our own correspondent.)
August 13,
The members of St. Mary’s Club assembled in their rooms in full force on the evening of August 5, to bid farewell to Mr. D. Dooling. The Rev. Father Clancy, who occupied the chair, made many complimentary references to the services of the guest of the evening, and expressed regret at Mr. Dooling’s removal from Hokitika. He congratulated him on being promoted to the Culverden district, and said he felt sure their guest would rise rapidly in the telegraphic department. Father Clancy then called upon the president of the club (Mr. N. Warren) to, present Mr. Dooling with a small memento in the shape of a travelling bag suitably inscribed. In handing the gift to the recipient the president expressed the keen regret that all members felt at his departure from the town, and on their behalf extended the best of good wishes to him. Several other members spoke in eulogistic terms of the departing member’s many good qualities, Mr. Dooling suitably responded, and thanked the speakers for the many kindly sentiments expressed by them. He said he would always treasure the gift, and he hoped that he would visit Hokitika at no , distant date, when he would be delighted to meet all old friends. Supper was then partaken of, and a most enjoyable little function terminated by the singing of ‘ He’s a jolly good fellow.’ .*> . J . J
