St. Dominic's College opened after the midwinter holidays on Tuesday.

A very successful euchre tournament, to assist in furnishing tile stalls at-the sale of work in aid of the local Dominican Convent, was held in the Sacred ; Heart School, North-east Valley, on Friday evening. The lady's prize fell to Miss M. Webb,'and the gentleman's to Mr. Davis. During the evening songs were given by Misses. M. Mellick and M. Wood, a trio by the Fogarty Brothers, and a recitation by Miss E. Anderson.

St. Patrick's Literary Club met on Monday evening in the presbytery. Rev. Father Delany occupied the chair, and Rev. Father O'Neill acted as judge of a debate on the subject, ' Monarchy v. Republic—which is the better form of government for the people?' This proved most interesting, members being allowed the right of interjection, many humorous remarks helped young speakers to get rid of their nervousness. The representatives of monarchy won the debate. "On next meeting night a mock parliamentary election : will be held, when it is expected some original political opinions will be put forward.- '-: ." :i'm*d ;•

On Friday evening a successful concert was held in the South Dunedin Town Hall, the proceeds being in aid of St. Patrick's parish debt fund.' An exceptionally large number of people attended and taxed the accommodation of the hall to its utmost. The programme was tastefully arranged, and the audience enjoyed the excellent entertainment. All the items were well. received. Mrs. R. A. Power, Misses F. Pacey; M. Pitcher, Messrs. J. McGrath, H. Poppelwelly/and E. J. Mee contributed songs; the Misses Davidson a character sketch; Miss Pacey, musical monologues; Miss M. Burke, a violin solo, and Mr. H. Russell recited. Thomson's String Band played selections and Mr. A. Pacey acted as accompanist. The Rev. Father Delany thanked the audience for their patronage, and acknowledged the services of the performers. A vote of thanks to the latter was afterwards carried by acclamation. ■ '['--'■
