Timaru

(From our own correspondent.) June 17. Mrs. Gawne has given a handsome donation to the church, in the shape of a rich set of candlesticks (six) for the high altar. The Catholics are strongly identified with the approaching Caroline Bay Improvement bazaar. Their help is sincerely appreciated and favorably commented on. , At the invitation of the Rev. Mother, the Timaru Choral and Orchestral Society gave a most enjoyable concert at the convent on Sunday afternoon. Over one hundred performers took part in the chorus and orchestra. Afternoon tea was served to the visitors who much appreciated the hospitality extended to them. The Catholic Club is going from success to success. On Wednesday evening they held an open night,.when the hall was crowded. A mock trial was the programme, and the members acquitted themselves to the evident delight of their audience. Mr. O’Halloran (president) and Mr. Knight (secretary) are working most energetically for the success of the club.. ° On the occasion ’of the recent visit to Timaru of his Lordship the Bishop of Christchurch, the children of the Catholic schools held' a musical and dramatic entertainment in honor of his Lordship’s silver jubilee. The boys and girls, under their respective teachers (the Marist Brothers and. the Nuns of the Sacred Heart), assembled in the spacious hall of the convent school * which was tastefully decorated. His Lordship was accompanied by the local clergy and the nuns’ and boarders from the convent. A special jubilee chorus

was nicely rendered by the girls, and the boys heralded Ireland’s re-awakening in a new version of the well known song, ‘ Tara’s harp.’ The Misses Flynn, Brosnahan, Kirk, r D’Arcy, and O’Meeghan then related in dialogue, with nice enunciation, the story of their books, criticising the various characters whose acquaintances they had made in literature. After a time the girls worked the conversation round to the study of a beautiful book of real life: — life of heroic deeds, spent in the work of God and men, viz., the life of their beloved Bishop. An address of congratulation was then read to his Lordship by Master Leo Brosnahan, and the children presented their silver offerings as tokens of their love and gratitude. His Lordship expressed himself as delighted with their entertainment, and thanked them most heartily for their good wishes and offerings. He exhorted them to continue to be true to the faith, which their forefathers, by the power of God and by their heroic lives, had handed down to them. The proceedings were brought to a close with cheers for his Lordship, who granted the children a holiday.
