ITEMS OF SPORT

(From our Correspondents and Elsewhere.)

GENERAL. According to a cable message from London, Stewart, a member of the Australasian Olympic team, won the United Hospitals Hundred in 10 l-ssec. J. E. Skeet (New Zealand) won the 220 yards race in 22 l-ssec, and the quarter mile in 50 2-ssec. At ; the annual sports of St. Edmund’s Catholic College, Ware, England, Master W. O’Donnell, son of Mr. M. J. O’Donnell, Hawera, and ex-pupil of Holy Cross College, Mosgiel, took pride of place in the long jump, 220, 440yds, and half-mile flat race, and was runner-up for the most points for the silver cup given on such occasions. When it is remembered that there are several hundred students,. Master O’Donnell’s successes are all the more meritorious. We heartily congratulate the young student on so worthily upholding the honor of New Zealand.

FOOTBALL. The results of Saturday’s senior matches in Christchurch were;Merivale 18, Linwood 3; Albion 11, Old Boys 9; Christchurch 30, Marist Brothers 3; Sydenham 12, Canterbury College nil. Rain fell heavily all day on Saturday at Wellington, and all games were postponed except the senior Rugby and hockey matches. The Rugby matches resulted:Athletic 17, St. James 6; Poneke 11, Victoria College nil; Petone 8, Melrose nil; Oriental 13, Southern 3. In the Rugby senior matches in Dunedin on Saturday University beat Alhambra by 11 points to 8, Zingari-Richmond beat Kaikorai by 15 points to 8, Dunedin beat Port Chalmers by 9 points to nil, Southern beat Union by 25 points to 6, Pirates beat Taieri Rovers by 17 points to nil. The Association matches at Dunedin on Saturday resulted as fellow: Mornington drew with Northern (3 goals each); Ravensbourne 5 goals, Maori Hill 2; High School Old Boys 6 goals, Roslyn-Wakari 4; Kaitangata and Christian Brothers first grade had no fixtures. In the fourth grade Northern A put up 9 goals against 1 by the Christian Brothers. In the school matches Christian Brothers beat Maori Hill by 7 goals to 2. The senior Rugby matches at Auckland on Saturday were continued in fine weather, but the grounds were a trifle heavy. College Rifles, who are in the competition for the first time, created a surprise by drawing with City, the leading team, after a fine game. City scored a try, and Rifles kicked a goal from a mark. Marist Brothers’ Old Boys beat Ponsonby by 12 points to 3. Parnell beat University by 6 points to nil. Marist Brothers are now equal with City for the championship, St. Patrick’s and Gisborne football clubs (writes our .Gisborne correspondent) met in the second round for the Lysnar Banner, Gisborne, winning by 10 points (two converted tries) to one try. These teams- seem fated to meet in bad weather, as on the previous occasion heavy rain made things most unpleasant for players and spectators. The game was very hard and willing, St. Patrick’s having the worst of luck in just missing to score on, several occasions, also in losing the services of O’Leary, a prominent forward, who retired with an injured kneecap. Playing Rugby on Saturday week (writes our Wellington correspondent) the Marist Brothers’ Old Boys defeated Victoria College by 19 points to nil. Eller (2), Scrimegour (2), and Hopkins scored tries, two being converted by McGrath. St. Patrick’s College (fifth class) drew with Wellington College B. St. Patrick’s College A (sixth class) defeated Wellington College by 21 points to 3, but St. Patrick’s B suffered defeat at the hands of Petone by 14 points to nil. On Saturday next an interesting game will be played at the Athletic Park, when St. Patrick’s College will take the field against Wellington College.

In last Saturday’s senior football D.C.L. shield contests (writes our Christchurch correspondent), Christchurch played and defeated Marist Brothers’ Old Boys by 30 points to 3. For the junior flag the Marist Brothers Old Boys, playing on their own ground, defeated Canterbury College by 16 points to 5. Tries for the Marists were scored by Perrin, Boswell, Kouri, and O Malley, two of which were converted by Koufi and Haughey. In the president’s cup match the Marist Old Boys, playing on the Canterbury College ground against Linwood B, defeated the latter by 15 points* to ml. Linwood leaving the ground at half time. In the primary schools round the Marist Brothers’ School played Lyttelton West on last Friday, winning the match by 25 points to nil. For the winners J. McCormack (3), Crooke (2), McLaren, Bennett, and Sloan scored tries, Jenyns converting two. Playing in the first match of the second round of the primary schools Rugby competition, the boys of the Marist Brothers’ School (writes our Invercargill correspondent) defeated the South School fifteen by 6 points to nil. _ The very wet and disagreeable weather made a quagmire of the ground, and militated against the open play which makes the game so attractive. As in the first round, this match was keenly contested, and the spectators witnessed some sterling play from both sides. After being denied two fair scores through the inability of the referee to keep up with the game, the Marist forwards, with a great rush, took the ball to their opponents line, and Coakley, picking up at the right moment, touched down, drawing first blood for the victois. Lee soon afterwards added another try, after a fine individual effort, his great pace and fending powers enabling him to elude the opposing backs. Of the forwards special praise must be given to Morris, O Neill (2), Duthie, and Sheehan, all of whom played a very, good game for the winners. At the ■ annual seyen-a-side tournament held by the South' Canterbury Rugby Union at Timaru on the King s Birthday the Celtic Club gained premier honors by carrying off the gold medals in the senior grade. In the first round they beat Pirates by 3to nil. In the. second round the pick of last year’s Christchurch premiers (Albion), who had beaten Ashburton, were easily defeated. Their final match was against Temuka, who had defeated by big margins both Zingari and Linwood. The play was fast and strenuous, and four extra spells had to be played before Celtic'gained a well-merited victory, which was heartily cheered by their numerous supporters. The team consisted of M. D’Arcy, G. Neall, E. Leigh, W. Dalton, M. Houlihan, J. Kirby, and F. McGrath. M. Ongley, late of M. 8.0.8., Auckland, and at present Science Master at Timaru High School, plays for Celtic from next Thursday.

GYMNASTICS. The St., Joseph’s Gymnastic Club, Dunedin, has evidently entered on a very successful career. Large and increasing attendances nightly go through the various movements, which reflect much credit on the squad leaders. A boxing class has recently been added to the regular curriculum. Members are fortunate in having at the head of this branch Mr. J. Kilmartin, of the Otago Boxing Association, who is recognised as being one of the best boxing instructors in the Dominion, and under his able tuition much good work should be accomplished.

HARRIERS. St. Joseph’s Harriers held their weekly run on Saturday from St. Joseph’s Hall, as guests of the Ladies’ Club. In finishing the run the pack had an impromptu race along the Queen’s drive back to the hall, W. Butcher ■ succeeded in getting home first, with C. Collins close up, second. The members sat down to do justice to the good things provided by Mrs Stone and her lady friends. [
